I hear dyou have to invest in a fortune to become a professional photographer
why would one invest ina fortune and risk not getting a return?

There are studios that will hire you and provide the equipment to you. These are usually those that require you to keep the equipment in the studio. If you travel or do a lot of photographs outside; you should consider the value of having your own equipment. You can start small and build as all other photographers do. The value is that you can take pictures on your own and do some of your own selling or offers to companies for special work.

You do two jobs at once! Just be sure the main company knows you do this on your own time and not theirs!

You can easily pay for your equipment and add more as you earn it.
