I really want to be a photographer, but I want to know if I can make a living off of it.

It can be anywhere from nothing to millions. It all depends on how well you market your talent.
It’s kind of like modeling in a way. A select few make millions, but most struggle to make a living.
My advice, don’t bother. There are a zillion wannabe photographers out there. And with the new digital cameras out now, you don’t even need to know how to use a camera.
Making a living out of this is not an easy thing to do. Do you even know what you want to take photos of? People? Cars ? Pets?…Most pros have a special subject matter…
Making it is more work than you may realize. You can make alot, or very little. There has to be a demand for your work. And you have to make yourself known.
Carl above makes a crap point and is negative.
I have seen idiots with cameras worth thousands take crap photos – i can take better ones on my phone. I set up in the evening at Loch Lomond to capture a dusk landscape…. and was hanging around for ages for the light to improve…. past walks the guys with huge DSLRs and took a couple of snapshots without even thinking about how to compose the shot…… they thought it was strange that i was waiting on the light for my photo…. i wonder whos was better !!! (shot was cracking and commissioned by a resident in Lomond Castle Appartments for a tidy £800 – not bad for a couple of hours work)
If you truly have a passion for photography and have invested time into learning the craft and you have good ideas, inspiration and plenty motivation….. you can make a good living from photography – it can be tough, but rewarding.
Depends. I have seen mediocre photographers flourish while I have seen some very talented and skilled photographer flop. The difference was business acumen. In today’s market business skills are more important than photography skills and talent. Learn about marketing and how to promote your work. Also where you live may play into the picture here, If you want to open a portrait studio- does the city have enough population to support another studio? Most photographers are self employed and income varies on how much work you can get and how much you can charge without underselling yourself or over charging your clients. Find a niche- something no one else is doing that there is a demand for.
